We had the opportunity once again to welcome Mark Gayler from Microsoft to our local chapter. On January 26th, 2010, Mark presented us with some very useful information on the new features of Windows 7 and what we can expect when planning and implementing our migration. He also discussed licensing issues, upgrade paths from existing operating systems, hardware requirements, and deployment methods.

We connect with people every day, some more strongly than others.  Each encounter is full of promise, and what we do with the opportunity is what turns strangers into support systems and colleagues into comrades.  Making connections and building relationships give people an insight into who you are, creating trust, knowledge, and friendships. By investing in others, giving a little of ourselves, and remembering that we have more in common than we have differences, we grow.  Thank you Sophie Klossner, HDI's Local Chapter Membership Director, for presenting to us on June 24th and helping us improve the relationships in our lives.

Bill Largent, IT Consultant for IBM Canada presented on Enterprise Asset Management to HDI members on April 22nd.  Bill's presentation provided a solid understanding around the basic concepts of  Asset Management and helped us gain a knowledge of important features and functions to look for in a  Asset Management system.

By the end of the day Bill had explained the difference between asset discovery and asset management, helped us identify the common integration points required with new or existing support systems, and explained additional benefits to an asset management system that go beyond knowing what assets you have.

On February 11th, Mark Gayler, Technology Strategist for Microsoft Western Canada Government, presented on Migrating to Windows Vista and Office 2007. The presentation was extremely informative and there was a lot of positive feedback.

The presentation was so successful there have been a number of requests for copies of the slideshow Mark used.  Microsoft has made this available to us to distribute to our membership.  Please click here to view or download the presentation.

George Spalding from Pink Elephant gave a fabulous presentation on Avoiding Staff Burnout at the last VIHDC meeting on April 14th, 2008.

The fast-paced, fun presentation defined the causes of stress and burnout and provided specific strategies for both avoiding and personally managing stress.  George also had some good tricks on managing stress and avoiding burnout for supervisors or managers to take back to their teams.

On January 16th, VIHDC held their third Chapter Meeting.  Brenda Iniguez of Frontrange Solutions spoke on "Synergizing the Generations in your Support Staff".  It was a very informative session and those who attended went away with some very useful information on working with multiple generations and tangible steps to effectively integrate them.

The second Chapter Meeting held on November 22nd in the CRD Boardroom was a great success.

We successfully filled five of the six executive positions.

  • President (2 year) – Norma Louden – Client Support Coordinator, District of Saanich

  • Vice President (2 year) – vacant

  • Secretary/Treasurer (1 year) – Debbie Scheibel – Senior Client Support Specialist, City of Nanaimo

  • Communications Officer (1 year) – Arwen Wallington – Help Desk Clerk, Malaspina University College

  • Executive at Large (1 year) – Christine Levold – Help Desk Manager, ICBC

  • Executive at Large (1 year) – David Street – Manager, University of Victoria

Clare Squires of Sector Learning and Platypus Consulting gave a wonderful presentation on ITIL.  We discussed the difference with ITIL version 3 and some examples of how ITIL has been used to improve service organizations.

The Vancouver Island Help Desk Chapter Kick Off Meeting was held Thursday, September 27th in the CRD Boardroom.

Thank you for attending the meeting.  What a Great event!  We received an overwhelming response towards this Chapter and we're very excited about the enthusiasm shown.

Speaker Barry Leinbach's presentation, 23 1/2 Big Fat Lies and Misconceptions about Help Desks!, was inspirational and he left the audience with some food for thought.
